What is a welcome email?
At its core, a welcome email is an automatic message that new subscribers receive when they sign up for your email list. It’s your chance to make a good first impression and set the tone for your future emails.
You can use a welcome email template or write your own, but the goal is the same: to welcome your new subscriber and start building a relationship with them.
When should you send a welcome email?
As you can probably guess, you should send a welcome email as soon as someone signs up for your email list. This is when they’re most engaged and most likely to open your email.
Specifically, if someone has just signed up for a lead magnet at the top of your funnel, you should send the welcome email almost immediately. If they’ve signed up for your newsletter, you can wait a little longer, but you should still send it within a day or two.
Why are welcome emails so important for course creators?
There are a few reasons why welcome emails are so important, especially if they’re one of the first parts of your course launch.
- They have particularly high open rates.
Welcome emails have some of the highest open rates of any email you’ll send. This is because people are expecting to hear from you after requesting your lead magnet or signing up for your newsletter. They’re primed to give you their attention. - First impressions impact conversions and retention.
Your welcome email is your first chance to make a good impression on your new subscriber. If you use a good welcome email template, they’re more likely to open your future emails and convert further down the line. - You can set expectations and earn your place in their inbox.
Your welcome email is also your chance to set expectations for future contact. You can let your subscribers know how often they’ll hear from you and what kind of content they can expect—reducing the chances of them unsubscribing. - You can start building trust from the get-go.
Finally, your welcome email copy is a chance to start building trust with your new subscriber. You can show them that you’re a real person, that you’re here to help, and that you have valuable content to share if they stick around.
What your welcome email copy should do (don’t miss any of these!)
Your welcome email copy should do a few things.
- Welcome your new subscriber - This is the most obvious one. Say hello, thank them for signing up, and let them know you’re excited to have them on your list.
- Deliver your lead magnet - If they signed up for a lead magnet and haven’t received it yet, include a clear link to download it.
- Introduce yourself - Tell your new subscriber who you are (by name) and what you do in relation to the content they signed up for.
- Establish credibility - Share a little about your background and why you’re qualified to help them with the problem they’re facing.
- Build rapport - Let your personality shine through in your welcome email, whether you’re funny, serious, or somewhere in between.
- Include social proof - In your (brief) backstory, include either your own success story or a case study from someone you’ve helped with the same problem your new subscriber is facing.
- Set expectations - Let your new subscriber know that they’ll be hearing from you regularly and what kind of content they can expect.
- Invite them to engage - Encourage your new subscriber to reply to your email or follow you on social media—whichever is your preferred way to connect with your audience on a 1:1 level.
- Give them a clear “out” - Make it easy for your new subscriber to unsubscribe if they’re not interested in hearing from you anymore. Nobody wins by keeping people on your list who don’t want to be there, so make the unsubscribe link prominent in this particular email.
